Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) was discontinued in April 2019. Due to this change, the Blackboard apps migrated to Google’s new Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). To maintain push notifications on your Android device, please update to Blackboard App 4.0.
iOS force to web logins recorded three times in activity accumulator table (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 4.3 released on June 24, 2019.
The activity accumulator table in the Blackboard Learn database records Mobile Login Attempt three times for every mobile app user login on iOS when the Mobile B2 is configured with Force to Web authentication. This affects logins from both the Blackboard and Blackboard Instructor apps. Mobile usage activity statistics for logins will be inflated for iOS app users.
Grade rounding differs from desktop view (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 4.3 released on June 24, 2019.
The Blackboard Instructor and the Blackboard app enforce these rounding rules that may cause grades to display differently from than the Blackboard Learn desktop browser experience.
- If the score or percentage is greater than 100, it is rounded to the nearest whole number.
- If the score or percentage is less than 100, it is rounded to 2 decimal places.
- Insignificant figures are not displayed.
Recurring Collaborate sessions don't open in app (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 4.7 released on October 24, 2019.
When users access a course through the Blackboard app or Blackboard Instructor app and tap on a Collaborate session, the session won't launch if it's part of a recurring series. The app displays an error message with instructions to access through the web. This issue doesn't occur for single Collaborate sessions, only recurring sessions.
App crashes when discussion threads accessed on iOS 12 (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 3.9.1 released on September 27, 2018.
When users tap a discussion board thread, the Blackboard app crashes consistently on iOS 12. Blackboard is working toward a resolution. At this time, it’s best to delay the iOS upgrade until a hotfix is available for the app.
iOS app may receive unsupported notification types
In certain conditions, the Blackboard app on iOS may receive additional notification types beyond the documented notification types.
Android displays only the documented notification types.
Course list favorites
In the Ultra experience on a desktop web browser, users can add courses to a Favorites list for quick access. Favorite courses appear at the top of the course list. The Favorites list is not supported by the mobile apps, and favorite courses will not appear at the top of the list.
Activity indicators for active Collaborate rooms
For Ultra courses on a desktop web browser, an indicator appears when a Collaborate room is in use. The activity indicator for active Collaborate rooms is not supported by the mobile apps.
Box cloud storage not available on iOS (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 3.9 by integrating with the iOS Files app. In iOS Files, you can add Box as a location. More on iOS Files integration.
The iOS version of the app supports Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive (personal). Integration with Box cloud storage is not supported by the Blackboard app on iOS devices at this time. In contrast, Android offers all cloud storage apps integrated with the device file system.
Duo 2FA iOS Push Notification Stalls in Duo App
After approving a Duo 2FA Push Notification authentication request from the Blackboard app, users remain stalled in the Duo app until manually navigating back to the Blackboard app by tapping the Blackboard back button in the upper left corner. After this manual navigation action, the pending authentication request will proceed.
DUO 2FA Push Notification not supported (resolved)
Resolved when users upgrade to iOS 12.
The DUO 2FA Push Notification method is not currently supported by the Blackboard mobile apps. Some configurations appear to work on Android and older iOS devices, but there is a known issue with iOS 11. To authenticate in the apps via a mechanism which has implemented DUO 2FA security, use the passcode method.
Ultra course conditional availability content preview isn’t supported (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 5.0 released on January 30, 2020.
The Blackboard app supports conditional availability of content in Ultra courses but doesn’t show students a preview of that content before they meet the conditions. In a web browser, instructors can allow students to see the content's title, due date, and availability dates for content that isn’t available yet. In the app, content is not listed in the app’s Course Content area if conditions aren't met by the student.
Assignment instructions don't display (resolved)
The issue where assignment instructions don’t display in the Blackboard app is resolved for systems running Mobile Web Services Building Block version 94.9.11+ or the equivalent bundled building block.
Resolved with the October 18, 2018 mBaaS release that fixed a regression issue.
SafeAssign report not available for app assignment submissions on Original experience
For assignment submissions made in the Blackboard app, SafeAssign originality reports aren’t available in Blackboard Learn Original experience at this time.
Originality reports function as expected for app submissions in Blackboard Learn SaaS Ultra experience.
Unsupported test presentation and review options
These test options are not supported within the Blackboard app when taking tests:
- One at a time question presentation is ON
- Timer with auto-submit is OFF (overtime)
These test options are not supported within the Blackboard app when reviewing tests:
- Provide feedback for individual answers is ON
- Show score per question is OFF
- Show incorrect questions is OFF
Ultra courses with Complete status display confusing warnings
When an Ultra course is marked as Complete, students can continue to access content but can’t begin new attempts or posts. While the Blackboard app technically handles this access correctly, the warnings displayed to users don't indicate that the reason users can't perform some actions is that the course is Complete. The course title on the course list doesn't indicate that the course is complete, so users may misunderstand the warnings as a technical issue.
Time zone differences for due dates
Time zones for due dates are different between Blackboard Learn 9.1 Original experience on a web browser and the Blackboard app. Blackboard Learn 9.1 Original experience displays all due dates in the server time zone, and Blackboard Learn Ultra experience and the Blackboard app show all due dates in the end-user machine time zone.
When a user is located in a different time zone than their school’s server, they see different times in the app compared to their Blackboard Learn 9.1 Original experience on a web browser. This difference can be especially confusing to students when the time difference pushes the due date to a day earlier or later. Blackboard Learn Ultra experience displays times in the end-user machine time zone along with the UTC offset value.
Due dates will not appear in activity stream if Dashboard Notifications are off
This includes both administrator global settings and individual user settings.
OneDrive for business not supported (resolved)
Resolved in Blackboard app version 3.9 by integrating with the iOS Files app. In iOS Files, you can add OneDrive as a location. More on iOS Files integration
The link to cloud storage feature supports integration with Dropbox, GoogleDrive, and personal MS OneDrive accounts. OneDrive for Business is not supported.
Blackboard app not compatible with Session Fingerprint
Resolved in Blackboard Learn SaaS 3500.7+
The Blackboard app is not compatible with Session Fingerprint settings to create a new session when the fingerprint changes. Several types of content that are not supported in the native UI are loaded in an in-app browser (webView), which uses a different user agent than the native app view. The traffic for webView requests does not go through the mBaaS relay like native requests, so the remote IP address and user agent changes. Therefore, the user agent and IP address must change in any webView workflow, and attempting to create a new session upon a change to the session fingerprint causes a session failure in the webView in-app browser.
App usage not recorded in Mobile Building Block Analytics
Mobile Building Block Analytics don't include usage for the Blackboard app or the Blackboard Instructor app. The Mobile Analytics link was removed from the Mobile B2 with version 94.9.11.
Web login does not save credentials
When an institution configures a web login page for the Blackboard app, the app doesn't provide an option to store credentials for a seamless log in when the app launches.
UPDATE: To provide a seamless login experience for Force to Web (FTW) schools, the Mobile B2 (94.9.1+) now offers extended mobile session timeout to maintain user sessions long term.
Content does not update while in a course or on a page
While a user navigates within a course or stays on a static page, such as Activity Stream or Due Dates, content does not update in real time. In order to see content and grade updates, you must navigate out of the course and back or navigate off the page and return. The exception for this is content with adaptive release rules for tests, assignments, and discussions, which will invalidate the cache upon submission and refresh the content.
Firewall whitelisting to allow mobile traffic
The Blackboard app requires two services—MLCS and mBaaS. MLCS is the Mobile B2 registration service that handles the school search. mBaaS is the service relay in Amazon Web Services that handles the request traffic for the Blackboard app.
Supported. However, on initial access, users must first set the first account avatar from a web browser. If no avatar was set previously, attempting to set the initial avatar from the app shows a message: We're sorry. Your school doesn't allow you to change your photo. Please contact your school for more information. After the initial avatar is set from a web browser, subsequent avatar photos can be set from the app.
