Proper configuration of NFS is critical to Blackboard Learn's performance, scalability, and reliability. Blackboard recommends the following NFS optimizations.

noatime

Add noatime option in /etc/fstab.

Linux records information about when files were created and last modified as well as when it was last accessed. There is a cost associated with recording the last access time. The ext2 file system of Linux has an attribute that allows the super-user to mark individual files such that their last access time is not recorded. This may lead to significant performance improvements on often accessed frequently changing files.

net.ipv4.tcp_sack

Add net.ipv4.tcp_sack = 1 to /etc/sysctl.conf on the database server prior to the reboot (Default on RedHat).

Enabling sack coincides with a sharp decline in wait time on log file sync, as was reflected in the decreased number of log file messages.
