Use Controls

You can use the Controls section to filter and refine the data shown in each report tab based on your needs. Each tab has a specific set of Controls or filters you can use. You can always go back and reset your controls.

Get a more detailed description of each control in our Anthology Illuminate Reporting Glossary Controls Section.

Overview Tab

Provides a high-level summary of the usage of learning tools within the institution, including user engagement metrics, identification of popular tools, analysis of usage across Institutional Hierarchy Nodes, and temporal trends.

You can choose one of the following key metrics from the filters to measure tool adoption:

  • Course count
  • Time spent on tools (minutes)
  • Tool count
  • User count

Key data points on this tab include:

How many users are using the tools?

This donut chart counts users by roles who have engaged with the tools.

Consider that:

  • The default roles shown in the visualization are Student, Instructor, Other, Unknown, and Guest. Use the Filter By Role option in the Controls section to view specific role data.
  • You can use the drill-down option to view the users’ activity categorized by Recent Activity, Past Activity, and Inactive.

What are the most used tools?

This heatmap represents the selected key metric by size and indicates the number of distinct users using each tool by color.

Consider that:

  • A larger size indicates a more significant value for the key metric being measured.
  • Darker colors indicate a higher number of distinct users engaging with the tools, while lighter colors indicate a lower number of distinct users.
  • The user count will vary based on your selections in the Controls section.

How are tools being used by Institutional Hierarchy Node?

This stacked bar chart shows how each tool type has been used in each level of the Institutional Hierarchy Nodes based on the selected key metric.

Consider that:

  • You can explore the data for more specific Institutional Hierarchy levels using the filters in the Controls section.

How tools are being used over time?

This line chart shows how tools have been used week by week based on the selected key metric.

Consider that:

  • The number of weeks shown will vary based on your selection in the Date Range options found in the Controls section.

Comparison Tab

Allows for easy comparisons of tool adoption across different timeframes.

You can choose one of the following key metrics from the filters to compare tool adoption:

  • Course count
  • Time spent on tools (minutes)
  • Tool access
  • Tool count
  • Total interactions
  • User count

You can view tools comparison between Quarters, Terms, or Years. Select an option on primary and comparison timeframe filters for data to load.

Key data points on this tab include:

Comparison percentage of users engaging with tools in the primary and comparative timeframes

Consider that:

  • The comparison percentage is determined by the difference in the total number of users engaging with tools on the primary timeframe and the comparison timeframe you've selected.

Comparison percentage of courses engaging with tools in the primary and comparative timeframes

Consider that:

  • The comparison percentage is determined by the difference in the total number of courses engaging with tools on the primary timeframe and the comparison timeframe you've selected.
  • The ‘DIV/0’ message indicates that there is no data available for the comparison timeframe you’ve selected.

How many users are using the tools?

These donut charts count users by roles who have engaged with the tools in the primary and comparative timeframes.

Consider that:

  • The default roles shown in the visualization are Student, Instructor, Other, Unknown, and Guest. Use the Filter By Role option in the Controls section to view specific role data.

Are tools being accessed?

This stacked bar chart compares the number of courses or users by Institutional Hierarchy Node accessing tools based on the selected count unit.

Consider that:

  • You can change the count unit between course and user count by using the additional filter within the visualization.

How are tools being used over time?

These line charts show the usage of tools over time based on the selected key metric and timeframe comparison.

Consider that:

  • Comparisons of Terms can vary in duration and are shown in separate visuals, while comparisons of Quarters and Years are displayed as a consolidated visual.

Which courses are using the tools the most?

This table displays the courses with the highest number of items accessed by one or more students within the selected primary timeframe.

Consider that:

  • You can explore the data for all item types or for more specific ones using the Course Item Type filter in the Controls section.
  • The total interactions measure access, clicks, views, or item downloads.

Which are the most frequent users of the tools?

This table displays the total items accessed by active users (not enrollments) within the selected primary timeframe.

Consider that:

  • The default roles shown in the list are Student, Instructor, Other, Unknown, and Guest. Use the Filter By Role option in the Controls section to view specific role data.
