The first time you or an instructor with the correct privileges accesses a newly created course, it appears in the Original Course View, but you can switch to the Ultra Course View. The only exception is if you enforced the use of the Ultra Course View for new courses when you configured the Ultra experience.

Create a new course

Administrator Panel > Courses > Create Course > New

Each new course you create must have a Course Name and a Course ID. Further options are detailed in the following table.

Options

This table describes each optional field for creating new courses.

Some fields aren't supported in the Ultra experience.

Course Information Available Fields
Field Description
General Information
Course Name [required] Course names don't have to be unique. For example, you can have three courses titled "Beginning Composition." You can change course names at any time. The maximum length is 255 characters. This field is searchable.
Course ID [required] Course IDs must be unique. For example, if you have three "Beginning Composition" courses, create three different course IDs, such as comp01, comp02, and comp03.

You can use numbers, letters, hyphens (-), underscores (_), and periods (.). All other characters, including spaces, are prohibited.

You can't change course IDs after you create them. This field is searchable.

Description Descriptions appear in the course catalog listing. Include a course summary and enrollment instructions.
Subject Area and Discipline Subject areas and disciplines group related courses together for easier searching and browsing in the course catalog.
Term Terms assign course availability to specific periods of time, such as sessions and days from end of enrollment. You can manage terms, from the Administrator Panel > Courses > Terms.

Both term and course start/end dates are used to organize courses into a timeline on the Courses page for instructors and students.

Availability

Available

When you make a course unavailable, students can see it in their course lists, but can't access it. Instructors see unavailable courses in their course lists and can access them. On the Courses page, unavailable courses are labeled as Private. Instructors can open courses when they're ready for students to participate.

Duration

This defines the time period the course will remain available.

Original Course View: Available courses are open to students to access or self-enroll in if a course allows self-enrollment.

Ultra Course View: Available courses are open to students to access or self-enroll in if a course allows self-enrollment.

Select Continuous to keep the course constantly available with no date restrictions.

You can select dates to limit course availability to specific dates. The start and end times are set automatically in the local time of the course creator. If the course creator's local time is Eastern, the time is set by Eastern time. The course will start immediately and the end at 11:59:59.

To limit course availability to a specific number of days after a student enrolls, select Days from the Date of Enrollment and provide the number of days.
