You can only add new font faces to the content editor in versions previous to 3900.0.0
You can add new font faces to the content editor expanding the ways text appears to users in a course. Adding font faces to the content editor provides new ways to format text anywhere in Blackboard Learn where the content editor appears.
For end users to see a new font, the font must be installed on each user's computer. They also must be set in each user's browser. To learn more, see Content Editor.
To add a new font to the content editor, you must edit a file in a language pack and then make that language pack available to your users. You can change one of two resource files depending on your requirements. Edit the key font.addition to add new fonts. Or, you can edit font.override to override the default set of fonts so that any additions appear in alphabetical order in the content editor drop-down list of available fonts. You must repeat the following steps for each language pack you support. Follow these steps to add a new font face or set of font faces to the content editor.
- On the Administrator Panel, under Tools and Utilities, select Language Packs.
- Open the menu for the language pack currently in use, such as English (United States).
- Select Export and save the .zip file to your computer, noting where you save the file.
- Unzip the file. The unzipped file contains a manifest xml file and a folder with the name of the language pack you exported.
Do not open or edit the manifest file. It must remain unchanged and be included in the edited version of your language pack zip file so the import functions correctly.
- Find the bb-vtbe-tinymce.properties file in this folder and open it in a text editor.
- Delete the # symbol before font.override or font.addition. You cannot use both keys simultaneously; font.override takes precedence.
- Add your fonts as needed. Separate font names with semicolons. Use this example for formatting, but remember to only remove the # symbol from one or the other key.
#font.addition=Book Antiqua=book antiqua,palatino;Dax Bold=dax-bold-webfont;Bradley Hand ITC Regular=bradley-hand-itc-regular;Open Dyslexic=OpenDyslexic
#font.override=Andale Mono=andale mono,times;Arial=arial,helvetica,sans-serif;Arial Black=arial black,avant garde;Book Antiqua=book antiqua,palatino;Calibri=calibri;Comic Sans MS=comic sans,comic sans ms,sans-serif;Courier New=courier new,courier;Georgia=georgia,palatino;Helvetica=helvetica;Impact=impact,chicago;Open Dyslexic=OpenDyslexic;Symbol=symbol;Tahoma=tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;Terminal=terminal,monaco;Times New Roman=times new roman,times;Trebuchet MS=trebuchet ms,geneva;Verdana=verdana,geneva;Webdings=webdings;Wingdings=wingdings,zapf dingbats
- Save the bb-vtbe-tinymce.properties file.
-
Rezip the locale code folder.
The zip file must be formatted exactly as the version you downloaded. The folder structure and number of files must be exactly the same. If the zip file does not match, the new language pack will not upload and you will receive an error message.
The native compression application for Mac OS adds hidden files and causes the upload to fail. To avoid upload errors from incompatible zip files, we recommend using a zip application such as Win Zip for Windows or Yemuzip for Mac. - Return to the Language Packs page.
- Select Import.
- Browse for and select the updated language pack zip file on your computer. Type your chosen custom locale code in the Name and Code boxes, then Submit.
- From the Language Packs page, make your new language pack available to users by selecting Manage from the menu. Next, select your availability options and then Submit.
- You must make the language pack available to users in each course if the new language pack is not the system default. From the control panel of a course, select Properties, and then select the new language pack from the drop-down.
Users need to select the language pack from their personal settings if it is not enforced in the course.
To test your changes, navigate to a page that contains the content editor. For example, create an item in a content area to access the content editor. In the content editor, examine the font menu to verify that the new font appears.
Select the font and type some text. If the font is not on your computer, the text may not have the visual appearance of the font you selected. In this case, verify the text is wrapped with the appropriate font by selecting HTML Code View on the content editor toolbar.
