When you deploy a test or survey in a content area, you set the options for feedback, due date, restrict by location, timer, multiple attempts, and presentation.
Access a test or survey's menu and select Edit the Test Options or Edit the Survey Options.
On the Test or Survey Options page, you can add instructions or a description that appears to students in the content area.
You also manage the test or survey's availability.
Unavailable and deleted tests and surveys differ in these ways:
- Unavailable tests and surveys deployed in a content area don't appear to students. When Edit Mode is ON, instructors and course builders can see unavailable tests.
- You can limit availability to a specific time period. Display dates don't affect a test or survey's availability, only when it appears.
- If you delete a test or survey from a content area, it is removed from that location. You can deploy the test or survey again as needed—in one location only.
- If you delete a test or survey from the Tests or Surveys page, it's permanently deleted from your course. The action is irreversible.

You can allow students to take a test or survey multiple times. The status of multiple attempts appears to students at the top of the test or survey.
Select Allow Unlimited Attempts to allow students to take the test or survey as many times as they want. Or, select Number of Attempts and type a number.
With multiple attempts for a test, you can also select which attempt's score to use in the Grade Center from the Score attempts using menu.
Some test settings enable you to control the amount of time that students can access a test or require a password for more secure online testing.
If you select Force Completion, students must complete the test or survey when they launch it. Students may only access the test or survey ONE TIME. The Save function is available for students to save the questions as they work through them, but they may not exit and re-enter the test or survey. In the instructions, Force Completion is noted and explained to students. If you don't enable Force Completion, students may save their progress, navigate away, and return to complete the test or survey.
If students accidentally close their browsers, leave the test or survey page, or lose power or their internet connections, they can't continue. They must contact you and ask for a new attempt.
You may want to reserve the Force Completion option. You can require students to take a test on campus, connected to an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi, and with a proctor. If issues occur, the proctor can reset the test.

Alternatively, you can set a timer to reduce the emails from panicked students who accidentally left a test or survey with Force Completion enabled.
Select the Set Timer option and type the amount of time in the box. During a timed test, the time elapsed is displayed to students. Timer warnings appear at set increments when half the time remains down to 30 seconds.
If a student saves and exits the test, the timer continues. A student could start on Tuesday, and save and exit. Then, the student could return on Thursday to finish. The completion time will be 48 hours.

To view the completion time, access a student's submission from the Grade Center and expand the Test Information section.
If you set the timer, turn on Auto-Submit to automatically save and submit a test or survey when time expires. If you don't turn on auto-submit, students have the option to continue after the time expires. Those tests and surveys are flagged as submitted after the timer expired. You can adjust a grade based on the time.
You may find it advantageous to use the Set Timer option and not Force Completion. For example, if a student loses internet connection for 10 minutes on a timed test, at least the test can be accessed and continued again. If you enabled Force Completion, the student can't access the test again and must contact you to reset the test.
You can require and type a password for students to use to access a test or survey. Passwords have a limit of 15 characters and are case sensitive.
You can require students to take a test or survey in a specific location. Students outside of this location aren't able to take the test or survey.
This option is based on a range of IP addresses created by your institution. If your institution hasn't created this range, this option doesn't appear.
IP addresses identify specific computers and are a good method to enforce location restriction requirements. On the Test Options page, select a location from the Restrict Location menu.
At times, you might need to allow a student or a group of students to take the test from somewhere outside of specified location (IP range). In this case, you can use the Test Availability Exceptions to exclude specified students or groups of students from the location restriction.
Students with this exception enabled can take the test from any location, even if the test has the restriction for other students.
In a high-stakes testing situation, you or the proctor can override a restriction that has been enforced by the system. On the Test Begin page, you can see the individual instances when students were prevented access to a test. You will also see an option to override this restriction to allow a student to continue the test.
These restrictions are logged by the system in the event that later review is required.

For existing availability settings, you can make exceptions for individual students or groups. You might use exceptions to provide an accommodation to a student who is disabled or for technology and language differences.
If you've made an adaptive release membership rule that delivers the test to only certain students or groups, only those students can access the test. If you add different students or groups to the Test Availability Exceptions section, they won't be able to access the test.
For a test with one attempt, you can allow more attempts for a student who is blind and wants to use screen reader technology for the first time.
If the settings exist for a test or survey, you can create these exceptions:
- Number of attempts
- Availability: Date and time the test is available to the student or group
- Force completion
- Restrict location
You can set a date and time in only one of these areas: adaptive release or test exceptions. If you set a date and time in one area and then set a date and time in the other area, the first setting is overwritten.
With test availability exceptions, you can offer certain students and groups longer access to a test.
In the Test Availability section, you choose to display a test on October 1 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
In the Test Availability Exceptions section, you can choose students and groups and give them longer access to the test. You must add a day and time for the After and Until fields.
If you use grading periods in the Grade Center, set a due date to easily include that test or survey in a grading period and on the calendar in the My Blackboard menu.
To prevent late submissions, you can select the check box for Do not allow students to start the Test/Survey if the due date has passed. After the due date, students receive a message that notifies them that they can no longer complete the test or survey.
When you allow late submissions, they're clearly marked on these pages:
- Needs Grading—tests only
- View All Attempts
- Review Test Submission
- Grade Details
Late submissions for automatically graded tests also appear on these pages. You must manually review late test submissions to remove the Needs Grading status. When you access a late submission and select Save and Exit, the automatically graded test grade is released to the student and the grade appears in the Grade Center column. Because surveys are anonymously submitted, you won't be able to view students' actual submissions. But, if a student submits a survey late, you also need to access the submission and select Save and Exit. Then, the Completed icon appears in the Grade Center and for the student in My Grades.
By default, a deployed test is included in Grade Center calculations. However, you can allow students to take tests for review or practice without impacting Grade Center calculations.
You can turn a test into a self-assessment by hiding students' scores in the Grade Center. Students can take the test to reinforce learning without feeling pressure about a score affecting their total grades. Select the appropriate options in the Show Test Results and Feedback to Students section so they're able to see how they did. If you select all options, students will see the answers they selected and which ones are correct.
|Include this Test in Grade Center Score Calculations||You can include this test in Grade Center calculations. If the test isn't included, the score doesn't affect any Grade Center calculations.|
|Hide Results for this Test Completely from Instructor and the Grade Center||You can hide this test score from you and exclude it from Grade Center calculations. The display in the Grade Center will read Complete/Incomplete and N/A or zero appears on the Grade Details page. You can't see students' answers to questions. Students can view their own scores.
When you select this option and edit column information in the Grade Center, these will be unavailable:
You can set which results and feedback are available to students after they complete a test or survey. You can set one or two rules with the menus. You can't choose some rules in combination. After you select a rule in the first menu, some may not appear in the second menu.
If rules conflict, the system grants the student or group of students the more permissive settings. For example, students will receive the greatest number of attempts and longest availability time.
The image shows the two default options applied to tests: After Submission and Score per Question. If you make no changes, students see their overall test scores and the scores earned for each individual question after they submit their tests. Select more options to determine what else they see, such as the correct answers or your feedback.
Students can always see their overall test scores. You can't change that option from this page. If you don't want them to see their scores yet, access the Grade Center column's menu and hide the column from students. However, when you hide a test column from students, they see nothing about the test in My Grades. When they access the test in the content area, they receive a message that says when they submitted their tests. No scores appear.

|When||You must make a selection. Set when appropriate test results and feedback are shown to students:
|Score per Question||Show the score earned for each test question. This option is a default for tests only. Clear the check box if you don't want to show scores for individual questions.|
|Answers||You can allow students to see information about their answers:
Example 1: Show more feedback
When students access their tests, they see their overall scores, each question's score, and all answer options. They see their submitted answers marked as correct or incorrect, and any feedback provided.
Example 2: Show less feedback to discourage cheating
If students take a test at different times, you can make a limited amount of feedback available until all students submit the test.
For the first rule, select After Submission in the first menu and clear the check box for Score per Question. Make no other selections. After they submit their tests, students can only see their overall test scores.
For the second rule, select After Due Date and select options to show more results and feedback. You can create an announcement to notify students that additional feedback is available to view.
|Feedback||Show instructor-generated feedback for each question. This option appears for tests only.|
|Show Incorrect Questions||Show the questions a student answered incorrectly or partially incorrectly. This option appears for tests only. You might show incorrect questions and allow multiple attempts so that students can focus their studying on those areas.|
In the Show Test Results and Feedback to Students section, you can select One-time View. After students submit their tests, the results and feedback options you selected are in effect for students to view ONCE. However, students can always view the overall test scores they earned. Immediately after a student navigates away from the test, any other options you chose are restricted. You can apply a second rule to allow students to view newly selected options at a later time. The second rule isn't combined with the one-time view rule, but is applied separately.
The ability to select different options for each rule allows you to show some test results and feedback initially, and then show more later.
Rule #1: Select One-time View and Show Incorrect Questions. Select no other options so that while other students are still allowed to take the test, no one can share the correct answers.
Rule #2: Select all of these options:
- After Due Date
- Score per Question
- All Answers
After the due date, students see their scores along with all answer options. They also see their submitted answers marked as correct or incorrect and any instructor feedback.
This table explains the options for presenting questions in tests and surveys.
|All at Once||Present all questions on one screen. Students scroll through all the questions and can move up and down from question to question. When selected, you may not choose Prohibit Backtracking.|
|One at a Time||Display one question at a time. The screen includes navigation tools to move between questions. The Submit function only appears on the last page of the test or survey. You may also select Prohibit Backtracking and Randomize Questions.|
|Prohibit Backtracking||Prevent students from going back to questions they have already answered. If you don't allow backtracking, questions are presented one at a time and the <<, <, and >> functions don't appear to students.|
|Randomize Questions||Display questions in a random order each time the test or survey is taken. If you include references to the question numbers as they appear on the Test Canvas, don't use this option because the random order changes the question numbering.

As you select assessment settings, you can allow students to see the correct answers to automatically scored questions after they submit. For example, you may want students to see which questions they missed on a multiple attempt assessment, but not see the correct answers. You may also hide answers until all students complete their submissions.
In the assessment settings panel, the Show correct answers check box isn’t selected by default, so correct answers are hidden from students. When you want students to review the answers with the assessment content, return to the settings panel and select Show correct answers.
The due date you set doesn't affect this setting. You must select the check box when you're ready to reveal the answers to all students.
After students complete an assessment and return to review it, a banner appears at the top of the assessment. They're informed that their instructor will reveal the correct answers after all students have submitted. Any feedback you've provided won't appear until grades are posted.
If you don't want students to see the banner for assessments without questions, select the check box for Show correct answers during creation.

You can add a time limit to a test in the Ultra Course View. A time limit can keep students on track and focused on the test because each person has a limited amount of time to submit. The test attempts are saved and submitted automatically when time is up.
You can also allow students to work past the time limit. Additional time allows students to reconnect if they lose connectivity during their attempts. You can allow extra time to see if the original time you set is enough for students to read and answer all the questions. When you grade tests, you can see how much extra time each student used to complete the test. You can also see which questions were answered after the initial time limit. Students also see this same information when they access their graded tests.
At this time, you can't add a time limit to group tests.
In the Test Settings panel, select Add time limit in the Additional Tools section.
First, type a time limit. You must add time limits as whole numbers between 1 and 480. Decimals aren't supported. Next, select one of two options:
- Work is automatically saved and submitted when time expires: If a student doesn't submit within the time limit, the system saves and submits the test automatically.
- Students have extra time to work after the time limit expires: In the menu that appears when you select this option, choose the amount of extra time:
- Unlimited extra time
The 50% and 100% options show how much time is added to the time limit before the test is saved and submitted automatically. For example, if you set 60 minutes as the time limit and choose 50% extra time, your students can work for an additional 30 minutes. Your students aren't alerted to the extra time allowed until the initial time limit is almost up. They receive a pop-up message that alerts them to the extra time allowed. They can choose to use the extra time or submit the test. They're informed that they may receive partial credit for work submitted after the time limit.
If you allow multiple attempts, the time limit applies to each attempt.
Select the X to return the Test Settings panel. You can view the time limit setting you made. Select the time limit to make changes. However, you can't edit the time limit after students have made submissions. Point to the time limit to access the Remove icon to remove it. The time limit also appears on the Course Content page with the test details, but the extra time doesn't appear.
If students have a time limit accommodation and you allow more time to complete an assessment in the settings, the times are combined.
Students see the time limit with other test details on the Course Content page. They also see the time limit on the test's Details & Information panel and within the test as they’re working.
When students select Start attempt, they'll receive a pop-up window to start the timer before they can access the test.
If you allowed extra time, when the initial time is up, another pop-up window informs them they can submit the test now or work longer. They're also informed that work submitted after the limit may receive partial credit. Your students aren't alerted to the extra time allowed until the initial time limit is almost up.
The timer keeps running whether or not students are actively working on the test. The timer appears at the bottom of the window to let students know how much time is left. If they save a draft or leave the test window, the countdown continues and their work is saved and submitted when time is up.

In Test Settings, you can choose to let students submit more than one attempt. Multiple attempts change how the test's final grade is calculated. Choose how you want to calculate the final grade:
- Average of all attempts
- First attempt with a grade
- Attempt with highest grade
- Last attempt with a grade
- Attempt with lowest grade
You can't allow multiple attempts on a group test or when you collect submissions offline.
The Grade attempts setting determines how the final grade is automatically calculated, but you have the option to override the grade. Each attempt is subject to the due date you set for the test. If a student submits an attempt after the due date, the attempt is marked late. Attempts submitted before the deadline are shown as on time.
You can only override the final grade, not the grades for each attempt.

You can randomize questions and their answers to support practice/drilling activities and help students avoid academic dishonesty.
You can only randomize answers for Multiple Answer and Multiple Choice questions.
You can use one or both settings so tests appear differently for each student. A message appears on the test's Content Settings page about your selections.
In Test Settings, select Randomize questions to show questions to students in a random order.
Questions appear in order as you create the test. Each time a student begins a test attempt, the questions appear in a different order. If you include references to the question numbers as they appear on the Content and Settings page, don't use the Randomize questions option. The random order changes the question numbering and may cause confusion.
After students start their submissions, you may select or clear the Randomize questions setting.
You can't randomize questions in a test with text blocks or files.
In Test Settings, select Randomize answers to show Multiple Answer and Multiple Choice answer options to students in a random order.
Answers appear in order as you create the test. Each time a student begins a test attempt, the answers appear in a different order.
After students start their submissions, you can't select or clear the Randomize answers setting.
When you create a test without questions, you can enable anonymous grading in the Test Settings panel. Student names are hidden while you grade. You may only add text and files to anonymously graded tests.
When you create a test without questions, you can enable parallel grading in the Test Settings panel.
The system randomly assigns graders you choose so each student has two graders for the test. The grading workload is distributed evenly among the graders. Graders can only open the submissions for the students assigned to them. Instructors or reconcilers determine the final grades for students.

When special circumstances arise, you can give an individual student an exception on a specific test or assignment. An exception includes additional attempts or extended access, even if the assessment is hidden from other students. An exception overrides the two settings applied to everyone else for only that specific assessment. Students don't see the exceptions you've added.
You need to set conditional availability—show on and hide after dates—before you set an individual exception for extended access.
You set test and assignment exceptions from the assessment's Submissions page or an individual submission. You might use exceptions for students who have internet issues, disabilities, or technology and language differences.
- Test with one attempt: Allow more attempts for a student who is blind and wants to use screen reader technology for the first time.
- Assignment with the conditional availability of Hide after date and time: Extend the access to an assignment for a student with internet issues. However, if the due date and time are the same as the original Hide after time, the submission is still marked late in the gradebook.
For a group assignment or group test, you can give an individual group an exception for extended access only. Multiple attempts aren't allowed for group assessments at this time.
Exceptions are different from accommodations you set in the course roster. An accommodation applies to all due dates or time limits in your course for an individual student. Exceptions aren't allowed for due dates and time limits for an individual student or group at this time.
From an assessment's Submissions page, you can add exceptions for students individually. You can also add exceptions from a student or group's individual submission page. You can't add an exception for an anonymously graded assessment.
From an assessment's Submissions page, access the menu in a student's row and select Edit settings. The Edit Submission Settings panel opens.
You can change the Show on and Hide after dates and times and allow additional attempts.
You can't save until you make a change to the settings. If you don't want to make any changes, select Cancel to close the panel.
From a student or group's submission page, access the menu next to the grade pill and select Exceptions. The Edit Submission Settings panel opens.
Example of extended access:
If you've hidden content after a certain date and time, you can extend the access for an individual student. For example, "Test 1" is hidden today after 10 AM. A student has internet issues, so you extend the access for just that student to 6 PM. However, if the due date is also at 10 AM, the submission is still marked late in the gradebook.
In the activity stream, the student is notified about the available test, but the extended access period isn't listed in the stream or with the test. You'll need to inform the student about the length of the extended access period. You'll also need to notify students individually when you allow additional attempts.
After you allow an exception for a student's assessment, you'll see an icon next to the student's name. The assessment exception icon is the same icon that appears for accommodations. If a student has an accommodation and an exception for an assessment, only one icon appears.
If you copy an assessment from one course to another, the exceptions don't carry over. Content is set to Hidden from students if you copy individual items into your course. If you copy one course into another course, student-specific data isn't copied.
You can offer a student an exception for an assessment you've already graded and posted. For example, if you want a student to redo an automatically graded test that has no more attempts, you can add an additional attempt. You'll need to inform the student of the additional attempt as the system doesn't send a notification.
If you've applied automatic zeros for unsubmitted work in your course, the student has a zero even after you add an exception. The automatic zero is replaced after you grade the submission.

Only one type of exception is allowed for group assessments. You can give an individual group an extended access exception on a specific group test or group assignment. Because multiple attempts aren't allowed for group assessments at this time, you can't change the attempts allowed.
From a group assessment's Submissions page, you can add exceptions for groups individually. You can also add exceptions from a group's individual submission page.
On a group assessment's Submissions page, the same icon appears for group exceptions and accommodations. The assessment exception icon appears with a group's name. If a group has members with accommodations, the same icon appears with the group's name. Access the menu for each group's name with an icon to view the exceptions you've added. If a group has members with accommodations and an exception for a group assessment, only one icon appears.
When you access groups from an assessment's settings panel, groups with exceptions appear with the icon next to the group name. Group members who have accommodations appear with the same icon next to their names.
You can remove a student or group's exception to an assessment.
From an assessment's Submissions page > student or group's menu > Edit settings > Reset settings
The exception settings are removed. The student or group now has the original assessment settings for the attempts allowed and the access time period. Select Save to confirm. The icon for the exception is removed unless the student or group also has an accommodation.
You can't reduce the number of attempts after students have started their submissions.
