Outcomes (competencies, standards, and goals) are specific descriptions of what a student has demonstrated and understood at the completion of an activity or course. Each outcome is evaluated by the instructor to determine whether the student has met the criterion.
The site administrator must set up outcomes at the site level and the outcomes must be included in the course settings to be associated.

You can grade some activities by rating. You, and if you want, your students can rate the work of a student. Ratings are then aggregated to produce a grade for that student's activity submission.
Example: A student's forum posts may be rated by their fellow students. Those ratings are then averaged and added to their overall course grade. You can choose whether ratings can be submitted by students and/or by teachers.
- Roles with permission to rate posts: This is a list of users who can rate an activity. You won't see a list here until you select an aggregate type and save the activity. To change the list, go to the Activity administration and select Permissions.
- Aggregate type: This defines how ratings are combined to form the final grade in the gradebook.
- No ratings - The activity doesn't appear in the gradebook. No grade is calculated.
- Average of ratings - The mean of all ratings.
- Count of ratings - The number of ratings becomes the final grade. The total can't exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
- Maximum rating - The highest rating becomes the final grade.
- Minimum rating - The lowest rating becomes the final grade.
- Sum of ratings - All ratings are added together. The total cannot exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
- Restrict ratings to items within a date range: Only allow ratings during a specific time frame.
- From: The date and time that ratings can begin being submitted.
- To: The date and time that ratings will no longer be accepted.

- Visible: Determine if the activity or resource is shown to or hidden from students within the course.
- ID Number: Create a unique ID number to create advanced grade calculations within the gradebook. This allows the creation of formulas based on grades within this activity or resource.
- Group mode: Decide if you want groups and if you want them to see each other or not.
- Grouping: A grouping is a collection of groups within a course. If a grouping is selected, students assigned to groups within the grouping can work together. To learn more, see Groups.
You can also define the default group mode for all activities at the course level. If the group mode is forced at course level, the group mode setting for each activity is ignored.

Decide when you want a resource or activity available to students. You can use dates, score ranges, Personalized Learning Designer rules, profile fields and/or the completion of other course activities to make items available.
You can choose if ALL or ANY availability restrictions must be met for the activity or resource to be made available.
- Date condition: Identify dates when the activity is available and then made unavailable again. The difference between access from/to dates and availability settings for the activity is that outside the set dates the latter allows students to view the activity description, whereas access from/to dates prevent access completely.
- Release code: Add a code to lock and unlock the folder using Personalized Learning Designer rules. This code is released automatically by the system once the conditions are met; there is no need for a student to enter the code anywhere.
- Grade condition: Specify a condition on any grade in the course: the full course grade, the grade for any activity, or a custom grade that you create manually.
- Group: Allow only students who belong to a specified group, or all groups. To learn more, Restrict Access by groups.
- User field: Restrict access based on any field from the users profile.
- Activity completion condition: Determines any activity completion conditions that must be met in order to access the activity. Completion tracking must first be set before an activity completion condition can be set.
Use the While access is prevented menu to select if the restricted activity will be grayed-out or hidden entirely.
Adaptive learning paths
Applying restrictions to activities can create adaptive learning paths. For example, one of three different lessons appears to students, depending upon the range their quiz score falls into.
Another example is a certified training course that requires approval from government regulators. Conditional activities assure that trainees are exposed to everything in the course, in a fixed order, and that the trainees meet certain standards at regular intervals before proceeding in the course.
To use conditional activities, the feature must be enabled by a site administrator.

You can set Activity completion options when you create or edit an activity. Activity completion works with course completion. With it you allow students to set their progress in a course or automatically update progress in a course based on conditions for activities.

Moodle's competency framework allows standards and competencies to be created and imported. Blackboard Open LMS supports importing CSV, ASN (RDF), Academic Benchmarks, RDF and XML based files.
Imported standards or competencies can then be assigned to courses and activities. Competencies can be marked as completed by an instructor for a student or through a new setting in activities that marks a competency as being met once the student meets the completion requirements. Students and teachers can also track student progress against standards at the course level.
