Grades are assigned automatically for online tests and surveys that have no questions that require manual grading. You can manually edit these grades.
You can assign grades in the Grade Center in these ways:
- Access items to grade from the Grade Center or the Needs Grading page. For some items, such as gradable blogs or discussions, you're taken to the tool where you assign the grade.
- Manually assign grades in the Grade Center.
- Upload grades from an external source, such as a comma-separated values (CSV) file or an Excel spreadsheet. You can work offline and then upload grades into the Grade Center.
You can assign grades in any cell in the Grade Center or from the Grade Details page accessed from a cell's menu. When you type in a cell, the grade may be an override grade. Press the Enter key to save your entry. If you don't, you're reminded.
On the Grade Details page, you can view a student's attempts and grade history, assign and edit a grade, and clear and exempt grades.
- Access a grade cell's menu and select View Grade Details.
- On the Grade Details page in the Attempts tab, select Grade Attempt and type a grade.
- Select Save and Exit to return to the main Grade Center page.
Select Save and Next to display the next attempt.

Video: Viewing Grade Details shows how to access the Grade Details page. You can view a student's attempts and grade history, assign and edit a grade, and clear and exempt grades.
You can send email reminders from Grade Center columns to students and members of groups who have missing coursework. Students receive a system-generated email that lists the course, coursework, and the due date if you assigned one. You receive a success message at the top of the screen when the email is sent.
You can also send reminders for assignments with anonymous or delegated grading enabled. To protect anonymity, students' names and attempt statuses aren't revealed.
You won't see this menu option if your institution uses an older version of Blackboard Learn.
If allowed by your institution, you can annotate and grade student assignment files directly within the browser. The inline viewer is powered by a third-party, cloud-based technology called New Box View.
You enable multiple attempts when you create tests and assignments. You can also choose which attempt to use for the grade that appears to students.
Access the Grade Details page from a cell's menu. The Attempts tab lists all submitted attempts so you can grade and clear attempts. You can also allow additional attempts. Grades for all attempts are tracked in the Grade History tab.
You can also ignore an attempt to keep it but omit the score from Grade Center calculations. The attempt isn't counted toward the number of allowed attempts. You may also edit an assignment grade.
Use the Delete menu to select one or all attempts to delete.
You can view a list of completed attempts from a grade cell's menu in the Grade Center grid. You may exempt a grade, but you can't clear or delete attempts from the menu.
You allow two attempts for an assignment. After submission, both attempts appear in the cell's menu.
If you grade one attempt, the score appears in the cell and the menu, along with the Needs Grading icon for the ungraded attempt.
When you allow multiple attempts, you may not need to grade all of them. In the grade cell's menu, each attempt appears with one or two icons. If you chose to use the first or last attempt for the grade, the attempt you need to grade appears with only one icon—the Needs Grading icon. If you have a large class and grading workload, you'll know which attempts need your attention.
The other attempts in the grade cell's menu appear with the Does not contribute to user's grade icon and the Needs Grading icon.
You won't see the "Does not contribute to user's grade" icon if your institution uses an older version of Blackboard Learn.
You can also use the Filter function to control which attempts appear in each grade cell's menu. The default view shows each attempt made. Open the Filter field and clear the check box for Show attempts that don't contribute to user's grade. Then, you'll see only the attempt you need to grade in each grade cell's menu.
Important: If you allow four attempts and choose to use the last attempt for the grade, only the Needs Grading icon appears with the last submitted attempt. So, if a student has made three attempts, the third attempt appears with only one icon—the Needs Grading icon. If you grade that attempt, the student can still make another attempt. The next attempt will appear with only the Needs Grading icon because it's the fourth and last attempt.
For some gradable items such as assignments, you can also select Grade Attempts in a grade column's menu and start grading. Attempts that aren't part of a student's grade calculation appear with the Does not contribute to user's grade icon. You can navigate to the attempt that appears with only the Needs Grading icon.
You can also filter your grading workload for multiple attempts on the Needs Grading page and view attempts on the Grade Details page. If you enabled anonymous or delegated grading for an assignment, multiple attempts are managed in the same ways. To protect anonymity, students' names and attempt statuses aren't revealed.
When you allow multiple attempts, you can choose which attempt to use as the grade. You can choose the attempt when you create the gradable item.
To change which attempt to use, access the column's menu and select Edit Column Information. Select from the options in the Score attempts using menu:
- Last Graded Attempt
- Highest Grade
- Lowest Grade
- First Graded Attempt
- Average of Graded Attempts
You can provide feedback while you grade. You can also return to the item's cell and include comments with any grade entry.
Comments you provide in the Feedback to User section are visible to students. Comments you provide in the Grading Notes section are for your eyes only.
Access the cell's menu and select Quick Comment. Type text-only comments in the Feedback to Learner or Grading Notes sections. Select Text Editor to access the full set of features, such as attaching files.
You can also provide comments on the Manual Override tab on the Grade Details page when you assign an override grade.

You can embed an audio or video recording with your feedback as you grade attempts. Students watch or listen to your feedback alongside any text you include.
Recordings can help you connect with students in courses with little to no face time. When paired with text feedback, video and audio recordings can help provide students with useful, actionable, and more personal feedback regarding their submissions.
Audio and video feedback isn't supported in grading with rubrics at this time. This feature isn't supported on all browsers. For the best experience, use Chrome or Firefox.
Grade with student names hidden
You can grade items without viewing student information. The students appear in random order without identifying information. Anonymous grading is helpful to reduce bias when grading.
- Access a column header's menu and select Grade with User Names Hidden.
Access a grade cell's menu and select an attempt. On the Grade Details page, select Hide User Names. Select OK. A new attempt opens.
- Provide grades.
- Select Save and Exit to return to the main Grade Center page.
Select Save and Next to show the next student.
Navigate to the next or previous student with the Grade Next Item and Grade Previous Item icons.
You can delete a grade. You can set grades to null by typing a dash (-) in the cell or press the Delete or the Backspace key to delete the grade. Press the Enter key to save your entry. If you don't, you're reminded to save the grade entry.
You can't delete default columns—First Name, Last Name, and Username—or columns generated automatically for gradable items. You also can't delete the external grade column. If you set a grade or calculated column as the external grade column, you must select another column as the external grade column before you can delete the first one.
When you create gradable items in your course, these grade columns are created automatically in the Grade Center:
- Tests, surveys, and Self and Peer Assessments
- Discussion posts
- Journal and blog entries
- Wiki contributions
The only way to delete these auto-created grade columns is to first delete the gradable items in your course. For some, if no student submissions exist when you delete the item, the column is deleted automatically or you can choose to delete the column.
Before you delete gradable content in your course, carefully consider the ramifications. Student work is deleted along with the deletion of the content item in your course, such as assignment submissions. The action is final. In some cases, you can choose to save the grades assigned in the Grade Center. Even if you retain grade columns, you can't access the student submissions because they were deleted with the item in your course. Or, make the gradable item unavailable in your course to preserve the submissions and the scores in the Grade Center.
Example: Delete an assignment
When you delete an assignment that has student submissions, you also delete all the submissions. You have two options:
- Preserve the scores in the Grade Center, but delete the assignment and all submissions. Though the scores remain in the Grade Center, you can't access the students' submissions again. This action can't be reversed.
- Delete the assignment, the Grade Center column, all assigned grades, and all submissions. This action can't be reversed.
You can exempt a grade from a student's record and the grade is ignored in all Grade Center calculations. The grade cell displays the Exempt icon. You can also apply an exemption before a grade is assigned.
If you assigned a grade and then exempted it, the grade remains available on the Grade Details page. You can also exempt a grade on the Grade Details page.
Access the cell's menu and select Exempt Grade. You can clear the exemption with the Clear Exemption option in the cell's menu.

This information also applies to organizations.
Want to see how many items are ready to grade in all your courses? In the list where your name appears, you have immediate access to all your grading tasks on the global Grades page. All your grading tasks are organized by course. You can quickly scan your progress, set priorities across the board, and even begin grading. No need to navigate to each course to see what's ready for grading.
The page only displays information if you need to take action. You see items that are ready to grade or which items are overdue for how many students.
Want to narrow your focus? In a course, you can access the course gradebook on the navigation bar. You can see who has made submissions and start grading.
From the activity stream, you're alerted when student submissions are ready for grading. Select the link to go to the gradebook. Or, select the item on the Course Content page to see how many students have made submissions.

You can assign, edit, and post grades from three locations:
In your course gradebook, select an item to begin grading. The submissions list page appears with a list of all enrolled students.
If you hid student names for assessments without questions, a message appears stating anonymous grading is in progress. The submissions list only includes a list of those students who've made a submission. All student information is hidden and student pictures are replaced with the general silhouette.
If you enabled parallel grading, you'll see when graders have attempts to grade or you have grades to reconcile.
You can search for a student or a group and select how many items to display on the page. When you search by student, add two or more letters or a first or last name. The system remembers your selection, so if you leave and come back, the setting is retained in the next session. You can select which page to view at the bottom of the screen.
Use the Filter menu to display only those submissions that need grading. At this time, you can filter by All statuses and Needs grading. The Filter menu doesn't appear for group and discussion items.
Keep track of all submissions on one page. Quickly see which attempts are ready to grade. Student profile pictures appear with a red circle when they have late submissions or the due date has passed with no attempt submitted. For submissions collected offline, select a student's name to start the grading process.
Access the details. Review the instructions and settings at any time. For example, select the Content and Settings link to return to the assignment or test page.
View students with accommodations. You can set accommodations for individual students and exempt them from requirements, such as assessment due dates and time limits. Use accommodations to help students progress in the course even though they may have difficulty with some requirements. Icons appear next to the names of students with accommodations.
Keep up with the conversation. If you allowed conversations about this content, select the Open class conversation icon. Students can discuss the content with you and their classmates. As the conversation develops, it appears only with the relevant item.
A purple circle appears with the icon to indicate new activity.
Download submissions. To accelerate your grading process, you can download students' assessment submissions and view them offline. You can download all or only selected submissions as a single ZIP file.
Start grading. Select student names to access their individual submissions, and assign grades and provide feedback. Type a numeric value of no more than five digits. You can include two additional digits after a decimal point. You can also assign grades directly on this page. These grades are override grades. An override label appears next to the grade. After you assign a value, click anywhere outside the grade area to save.
Ready to post grades? Post appears next to each grade that you haven't released yet. You can choose which grades to post and when. Posted grades appear with a Posted message in the column. You can also grade all submissions for an item in succession and then select Post all grades to release all grades in one action.
If you chose not to show correct answers for automatically scored questions, return to the assessment settings panel and select the Show correct answers check box.
For manually added items, no submissions exist. You assign grades directly on the submissions list page. After you type a value, click anywhere outside the grade area to save. You can also provide feedback. Manually added items with grades are posted immediately. If you made the item visible to students, they can see their grades.
From a student's submission page, access the menu next to the grade pill to add an exception for an assessment. An exception includes additional attempts or extended access, even if the assessment is hidden from other students. You can also add exceptions after you post grades.
When you start or review grading, you can point to a submission timestamp to view more information. Timestamps appear on students' submission pages and on their attempts panels when you've allowed multiple attempts for an assessment.
For example, on a student's submission page, you can view when the student made the submission and when you posted the grade. The timestamp appears in red with a "late" label after the due date passes.
For multiple attempts, on the Submissions list page, select a student's name to open the attempts panel. Point to a timestamp to view the additional information.
Open an attempt. On the Submission page, select the feedback icon to open the feedback panel. The panel remains in place as you scroll through the assignment and add overall feedback and a grade.

Access student submissions from the submissions list page in your course gradebook.
If allowed by your institution, you can annotate and grade student files directly within the browser. The inline viewer is powered by a third-party, cloud-based technology called New Box View. New Box View is supported on the same browsers Blackboard Learn supports.
If you've enabled parallel grading, you and students aren't able to view graders' rubrics and annotations in student files. Students only see the rubrics and annotations that the final grader—known as the reconciler—provides.
Supported files open automatically in the browser.
New Box View annotations aren't fully supported on Chrome. For the best experience, use Safari or Firefox.
See a count of how many you've graded. You can view your progress in the upper-right corner.
Add comments, highlight text, and draw on the document. Annotations are saved as you work.
- Comments: Select the Point annotation mode icon and point to wherever you want to add a comment. Select Post. You can continue to add comments in succession. Open a comment again and select the Delete icon in the right corner to remove it.
- Highlight text: Point and drag your cursor to highlight text, then select Highlight text. Select Add comment to highlighted text to add a comment to a highlighted area. To remove a highlighted area, select Highlight text again.
- Draw: Select the Drawing annotation mode icon. Then, press down and drag the pointer to draw on the document. Save or Delete your drawing. You can continue to add drawings in succession and save or delete all drawings in one action. You can't edit or delete drawings after you save them.
- Additional actions: Point to the bottom of the screen to access functions. You can zoom in and out, and navigate to other pages in a student's file.
Select a file option. After you open a file inline, annotate, and add a grade, the file's menu options update. You can download the original student file or a PDF with your annotations. The time to create the PDF depends primarily on the size of the original file.
Use your browser's print function to print the downloaded file.
A known issue with Chrome's built-in PDF viewer may not display all your annotations. Please view annotated PDFs in a native PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat. Students won’t see any annotations in their files until you post grades.
Grade, provide feedback, and post. Assign a grade and select the feedback icon to add a note with suggestions, encouragement, and overall feedback about the submission. Access the menu to post the grade or delete the submission. You can also give the student an exception on this assessment. An exception includes additional attempts or extended access, even if the assessment is hidden from other students.
If you associated a rubric, the grade pill displays the rubric icon.
If you included questions in an assessment, you can open a question's menu and select Edit/Regrade to make changes that affect everyone's assessments. You receive a warning after you save your changes if student submissions exist and regrading will occur.
Post now or later. You can post grades and feedback for students to see as you grade each submission. On the submissions list page, Post also appears next to each grade that you haven't released yet. You can choose which grades to post and when.
What do students see? After you grade assessments and post the results, students can view their scores on their grades pages or in the activity stream. They can also access an assessment, their submissions, your feedback, and their grades from the Course Content page.
The student grid displays the scores students have earned. Select a cell to begin grading. These grades are override grades. An override label appears next to the grade in list view.
If more than one student has the same name, names are ordered by student IDs. The profile cards display usernames if allowed by your institution.
Assign and manage grades. New Submission appears in cells when students have submitted work. Click anywhere in a column to access the management functions or assign a grade. Select the cell or grade value to edit an existing grade or add a new entry. After you assign a value, click anywhere outside the grade area to save.
View submissions. If a submission exists, select View in the menu to view the student's work. The View option is disabled if no submission exists, such as for submissions collected offline. We recommend you grade offline submissions from the list view.
Post grades. When you're ready to release grades to students, select the Post option in the column header. All grades you've assigned for this column are posted for students to see. If you want to post one at a time, click within that student's cell and select Post in the menu. Posted grades appear with a Posted message in the column.
Add items or calculations. Select the plus sign wherever you want to add an item or calculation.
View total points. In each column header, you can view the total points for each item or calculation and easily see the grade each student earned.
View your grading progress. In each column header, the number of graded submissions appears, along with the number of grades you've posted. When you've graded and posted all the submissions, Complete appears with a green check mark.
In the Gradebook Settings panel, you can choose to automatically assign zeros to missing work past the due date. Students and groups can still submit work after an automatic zero is assigned and you can grade as normal.
Select the Assign automatic zeros for past due work check box.
In new Ultra courses, the automatic zeros setting is enabled by default.
After you enable this setting, you don't have to go through your gradebook to manually assign zeros. The automatic zeros setting applies to these graded items:
- Assignments and group assignments
- Tests and group tests
- Graded individual and group discussions
The automatic zeros setting doesn't apply when you collect submissions offline. As the instructor, you manually create the student attempts and submission dates and times.
In each graded item's settings panel, you determine how to display the grade to students:
- Letter grade
The grade pill for each assessment question and graded item may appear in colors or with dark backgrounds.
By default, the grade pills appear in five colors. The five colors represent performance and appear for all roles. The highest score range is green and the lowest is red. You can't customize these colors or the percentages.
The colors map to these percentages in your course and gradebook:
- > 90% = green
- 89–80% = yellow/green
- 79–70% = yellow
- 69–60% = orange
- 59–50% = red
Your institution can disable the color scheme for all courses. Your institution can't disable or enable colors on a course-by-course basis. In the disabled state, the grade pills appear with dark backgrounds and white grades. Colors won't be used to convey performance.
You can download the full gradebook or select columns from your Ultra courses. You can export the file in a comma-delimited (CSV) or tab-delimited (XLS) format. You choose whether to save the file to your device or the Content Collection.
You can import your downloaded file into an application such as Microsoft ®Excel® to do statistical analysis or other ad hoc computational work.
You can also upload a grade file you worked on offline and update your gradebook.
