Course Catalog can be set up for learners to use on a subscription basis. In this use case, learners purchase access to a catalog of courses rather than purchase individual courses. The offering manager configures one offering as the subscription course and sets up other offerings to be viewable only by those learners who have purchased that course. This is accomplished by giving learners who purchase the subscription course a specific institutional role, and only allowing learners with that role to view and enroll in the courses included in the subscription.
Create a custom modality
You will first create a custom modality for the subscription course. Having a Subscription modality will allow learners to filter the catalog based on the subscription option.
- Navigate to Administration > Settings > Catalog > Modalities Settings.
- Select Self Paced from the Rename Modality menu.
- Enter "Subscription Membership" in the Modality Name text box.
- Select Create then select Save.
Create the subscription offering
Next, you need to designate the subscription offering. To do this, create a new offering, making each of the following choices in the process:
- Choose the Subscription Membership modality from the Modality menu.
- Select the Subscriptions toggle.
- From the Assign institution role menu, select the institutional role that will be assigned to learners who purchase a subscription.
- Enter the cost of the subscription in the Cost box.
Create catalog offerings
Finally, you will create offerings that learners can enroll in once they have purchased a subscription. To do this, create courses and offerings as usual. When you create offerings, choose Restricted from the Visibility menu. From the Roles Allowed for Enrollment menu, choose the institutional role assigned to learners who purchase a subscription.
After the learner purchases the subscription offering, they will have to relaunch the Course Catalog application to see all the subscription content available in the catalog.
