In the Original Course View, you can reuse questions from all existing tests, surveys, and pools in your course.
Doesn't seem familiar? Jump to the "Ultra" help about reusing questions.
If enabled, be sure to disable the pop-up blocker for Blackboard Learn so you can access the Find Questions window.
On the Find Questions page, you can browse, preview, filter, and select test questions created or imported into your course.
By default, all questions appear in the list. To narrow your selection, browse based on certain criteria including metadata. The more metadata you add to each question will help you narrow your search.
The Find Questions page consists of the active filter area that displays all the questions that meet your search criteria. The dynamic list changes automatically as you select or clear criteria. The Selected Questions area displays the questions you've already selected, so you don't have to scroll up and down long lists of questions.
When you reuse a question, questions in tests that are already linked somewhere else don't appear in searches and aren't selectable.
On the Find Questions page, you can copy a question from an existing test to a new test or link to the original question in the new test. A linked question shows in any test that contains that question. When you copy a question, your changes only appear in the new copy.
|Copy a question||When you copy a question, you can edit the new copy without concern. Other tests aren't affected.||Changes you make to one instance of the question aren't reflected in the other instances.
If you want changes to show in all instances, you must find and edit each copied instance.
|Link to original question||Changes you make to a linked question in any test are reflected in all tests where the question is linked.
In a test, linked questions are indicated by an icon. When you edit a linked test question, the status message lists other tests that contain the linked question.
When you change linked questions that appear in tests with completed or in-progress attempts, you're warned that your change will affect those attempts.
|Changes you make to a linked question appear in all tests where that question occurs. You can't select which tests are changed.
The option to link or copy is only available on the Find Questions page. To remove the link from a question, delete the linked question from the test and add it again as a copy.
You can't add new questions to tests that you've deployed.
- Access a test, survey, or pool. From the Reuse Question menu, select Find Questions.
- In the pop-up window, you can Copy selected questions or to Link to original questions.
- In the Browse Criteria panel, expand the criteria sections and select specific criteria. You can search within pools, tests, question types, categories, topics, levels of difficulty, and keywords. All questions meeting those criteria appear. You can also use the Search current results box to type a phrase, word, or part of a word to find matching questions.
- Select the check boxes for the questions you want to add. The questions appear in the Selected Questions area at the bottom of the screen. You can expand the area to view your list of questions. Select the red X next to a question to remove it. The question is removed from the collection, but not deleted from your course.
- Select Submit. The questions are added to your test, survey, or pool.
As you select criteria in the Browse Criteria section, the relevant questions appear in the active filter list.
The selected criteria appear as a reference. The active filter list is empty if no matching questions exist.
- Pools: Instructor-created collections of questions, usually related to each other, that you can include as an entire group in a test, survey, or another larger pool
- Tests: Includes both tests (graded) and surveys (not graded)
- Question types: Select one or more of the question types
- Categories: Select from the assigned categories of questions
- Topics: Select from the assigned topics of questions
- Levels of Difficulty: Select from the levels of difficulty assigned to questions
- Keywords: Select by assigned question keywords
Reminder: The questions you select through this process appear in the Selected Questions area at the bottom of the page.
The questions you can find may be limited based on your specific access permissions.

Video: Reuse questions explains how to reuse questions in assessments in the Ultra Course View.
Doesn't seem familiar? Jump to the "Original" help about reusing questions.
In the Ultra Course View, you can reuse questions and other content from all existing tests, assignments, and question banks in your course.
The Original Course View's question pools appear as question banks after conversion. Unsupported question types are removed.
On the Reuse Questions page, you can browse, preview, filter, and select questions created or imported into your course. You can view the questions, but you can't make edits until you copy the questions to your assessment. You can also reuse other content you added to assessments, such as text blocks, files, images, and videos.
You can't reuse questions when these settings or conditions exist:
- You've added a rubric to your assessment.
- You chose to collect submissions offline.
- Students have opened the assessment.
Also, you can't reuse text blocks or files if you chose to randomize questions.
In an assessment, select the plus sign wherever you want to reuse questions or assessment content. Select Reuse questions from the menu. The copied questions and content are inserted at this point in the assessment.
On the Reuse Questions layer, the Filter Criteria panel is open by default and all questions and assessment content appear in the active filter area on the right. The active filter area changes automatically as you select or clear criteria.
On small devices, the Filter Criteria panel is closed by default.
In the Filter Criteria panel, select the assessments or question banks you want to browse. Empty sources are filtered out.
As you select sources, the relevant questions and assessment content appear in the active filter area. The information at the top of the panel shows how many sources you chose and how many total items appear to choose from. Select the X to the collapse the panel and increase the area to view content. Select Filter to open the panel.
You can expand questions and content to view them. Questions with goal alignments appear with trophy icons next to the point values. Goal alignments copy with the questions. You can't edit the content or the point values until you copy the items into an assessment.
Select the check boxes for the questions and assessment content you want to copy. You can view how many items you've selected to copy at the bottom of the screen.
Select Clear all to clear the check boxes in the Sources section. If you already chose some items to copy, those items are still ready to copy. In the active filter area, you can clear the check boxes for the questions and assessment content you no longer want to copy.
Select Copy Questions. The questions and assessment content are copied to your test or assignment. In the assessment, you receive a notification: X questions copied successfully to the assessment.
You can edit the new copies in your assessment without concern. Other assessments aren't affected. Changes you make to one instance of the question or content aren't reflected in the other instances. If you want changes to show in all instances, you must find and edit each copied instance.
You can expand questions and content to view them.
You can use the keyboard to navigate in these ways:
- Use the Up/Down Arrows to navigate questions.
- Use the Right/Left Arrows to expand and collapse questions.
- Use the TAB key to navigate source groups.
- Select check boxes with the spacebar.
You can import ZIP files of Original Course View question pools into your Ultra course. The Original course's question pools appear as question banks after conversion. Unsupported question types are removed.
On the Course Content page, access the menu next to the Books and Tools link. Select Import Content > Import Course and choose the ZIP file to upload from your computer. The Course Content page displays a message that the content is importing. But when you only import questions, the content doesn't appear on the Course Content page. You can only access the imported questions on the Reuse Questions page.
Your Original course's question pools appear as question banks after conversion. Unsupported question types are removed. You can only access your question banks on the Reuse Questions page.
When you convert an Original course to Ultra, two decimal places carry over.
