About Mobile Web Services Building Block

The Blackboard Mobile Web Services Building Block enables users to connect to their course content on their mobile devices. Blackboard has several mobile applications: Blackboard app, Blackboard Instructor, and Bb Grader.

      • Help for Blackboard App. This app is tailored to students' needs by providing timely information in an activity stream and a consolidated list of due dates. Students can also access course content, take tests, and submit assignments on iOS, Android, and Windows phones.
      • Help for Blackboard Instructor. Blackboard Instructor is a mobile app that enables instructors to view course content, connect with students in discussions, and interact with their classes in Blackboard Collaborate. Users see all of their current courses where they're enrolled as an instructor, TA, or other role with the appropriate permissions.
      • Help for Bb Grader. Bb Grader is a portable solution for instructors for reviewing, providing feedback, and grading student submissions in Blackboard Learn courses on iPads.

      Installation

      Self-Hosted Clients

On a fresh install of Blackboard Learn, the Mobile Web Services Building Block is inactive by default, and will need to be activated and registered with the Mobile Learn Central Service, which can be completed from within the building block.

For Blackboard Learn instances that already have an older version of the Mobile Web Services Building Block, updating to the latest version will retain the same state as the previous version. If the previous version was active and registered, the new version will retain the registration without any additional action on the administrator's part.

Disable and Remove the Building Block

If an administrator disables or removes the building block, users will not be able to locate their Blackboard Learn instance when using the Blackboard app, Blackboard Instructor, or Bb Grader school picker. The administrator must re-enable, or re-install the building block.

      Install Building Blocks

      Roles

Administrators install the building block and register the institution. Users install the Blackboard app, Blackboard Instructor, or Bb Grader depending on their system role.

      Roles and Privileges

      Dependencies

The Mobile Web Services Building Block must be registered with the Mobile Learn Central Service, which can be completed from the building block.

      • Refer to the version-specific release notes for the build location.

Blackboard Mobile strongly recommends that all clients, self-hosted and those that use Managed Hosting, upgrade the Mobile Web Services Building Block. For recommendations and best practices when upgrading building blocks, please see Article #35604 - Recommended Building Block Upgrade Order and Best Practices.

Blackboard services will need to be restarted on each server in the environment in a rolling fashion.

If you have any questions about upgrading, please submit a support case on Behind the Blackboard.

      Managed Hosting Clients

Managed Hosting clients should create a case on Behind the Blackboard to schedule the recommended server restarts after the building block is updated. To expedite the scheduling process, please include a desired day and time for the restarts to begin.

If you have any questions about upgrading, please submit a support case on Behind the Blackboard.
